Logista Pharma launches its 2026 flu vaccination campaign with an expected 6 million doses and more than 3,200 delivery points.
- Nine out of every ten doses distributed by the company are delivered between September and October, although planning begins several months in advance.
- Transport capacity increases by more than 150% during the campaign’s busiest periods, with operations exceeding 40 vehicles per day.
- In addition to this nationwide operation, Logista Pharma is responsible for the distribution of COVID-19 vaccines across the Madrid region, delivering more than 800,000 doses to 900 delivery points.
With the launch of the vaccination campaign, Logista Pharma has implemented a high-intensity logistics operation to ensure that almost 6 million flu vaccine doses are delivered on time and under the appropriate conditions to more than 3,200 supply points, including hospitals, health centres and vaccination sites across Spain. Within this volume, the company’s main laboratory partner expects to distribute more than 4.6 million vaccine doses this year.
Although the campaign is concentrated within a few weeks in autumn (last year, 88% of the doses distributed by Logista Pharma were delivered between September and October), it requires months of preparation. Planning includes demand forecasting, storage capacity management, route and transport organisation, as well as resource allocation and contingency plans to respond quickly to any potential disruption.
In this regard, negotiations on framework agreements and regional tenders begin in February. This is followed by the industrial production of the vaccines, adapted to the annual strain, while the process intensifies between July and August with logistics planning and territory allocation.
This level of activity requires additional transport resources throughout the campaign. During peak demand periods, the company increases its daily operations from 16 vehicles to more than 40, representing an increase of over 150%.
Cold chain management and special requirements
Pharmaceutical logistics involves specific requirements that make it particularly sensitive and complex, as strict storage conditions, traceability and quality controls must be maintained throughout the entire supply chain. Some vaccines require specific conditions, including storage at -20°C and -70°C, as well as specialised handling and conditioning processes.
Throughout the campaign, Logista Pharma holds daily meetings with laboratories to monitor operational performance, anticipate potential issues and adapt resources in real time.
Ignacio Sánchez Caballero, General Manager of Logista Pharma Iberia, said: “Behind every dose there is a coordinated and demanding effort aimed at ensuring the vaccination campaign is carried out with the highest level of reliability, even during periods of peak activity concentrated within just a few weeks.” He added: “Thanks to logistics coordination, we can manage multiple campaigns simultaneously, each with different requirements, including flu, RSV, COVID-19 and other vaccines, adjusting storage and transport capacity according to the specific needs of each one.”
Operations in the Madrid region
Alongside its role in the national flu vaccination campaign, Logista Pharma is also responsible for the logistics service covering the reception, storage, conditioning and distribution of COVID-19 vaccines across the Madrid region, following the extension of the contract until September 2027.
The programme currently involves the distribution of 840,320 doses and 206,720 vials to approximately 900 delivery points.
