Clinical research: a key pillar of health progress

calendar 05 November, 2025

Clinical research is one of the fundamental pillars of medical advancement and societal well-being. Thanks to it, new treatments, safer therapies, and innovative solutions are developed every year, transforming healthcare. But for a clinical trial to achieve excellence, beyond a solid scientific design, pharmaceutical logistics, traceability, sustainability, and collaboration among all professionals involved are also essential and decisive.

In this context, the new Guide to Excellence for Conducting Clinical Trials in Hospital Pharmacy (Farmaindustria, 2025) marks a turning point in understanding operational excellence. This guide strengthens the strategic role of logistics in the success of clinical research, promoting professionalization, digitalization, and sustainability across all processes.

Spain: a European leader in clinical research

Spain has established itself as one of the leading countries in clinical research. With over 900 authorized clinical trials each year and growing involvement from hospitals and patients, the country has become a benchmark for attracting international projects of high scientific and social value.

On September 30, 2025, the updated Guide to Excellence for Conducting Clinical Trials in Hospital Pharmacy was presented in Barcelona. It was developed by Farmaindustria, the Spanish Society of Hospital Pharmacy (SEFH), and the General Council of Official Pharmacists' Associations (CGCOF). This update builds on the 2022 version and incorporates the key pillars shaping the future of the sector: innovation, digitalization, sustainability, and collaboration.

1. Digitalization and traceability: the engine of excellence

Digitalization in pharmaceutical logistics is the foundation for building a safe, transparent, and efficient supply chain.

At Logista Pharma, we have developed advanced digital traceability systems that allow tracking each batch of medication from receipt to dispensing or return, ensuring patient safety and compliance with the most demanding regulations.

Our platforms also interoperate with hospitals and sponsors, enabling remote monitoring and automated document management. This digital approach enhances efficiency by optimizing processes, reducing errors, and providing visibility throughout the supply chain. Traceability not only ensures control and transparency but also builds trust among all stakeholders in the clinical trial.

2. Sustainability: a real commitment to the environment

Sustainability has evolved from a trend to an ethical and operational obligation.

At Logista Pharma, we are committed to reusing isothermal packaging, reducing waste, and minimizing the carbon footprint of our operations. We also prioritize the use of recyclable materials and responsible waste management, integrating sustainability criteria into every logistical decision.

Sostenibilidad Logista

Aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), we strive to balance operational efficiency with environmental respect, contributing to a greener, circular, and future-oriented model.

3. Innovation and decentralization

Decentralizing clinical trials in the pharmacy service is one of the most transformative trends in the sector. Home delivery and collection of investigational medication bring research closer to the patient’s home, improving accessibility, flexibility, patient retention, and quality of life throughout the trial process.

At Logista Pharma, we actively participate in home delivery projects for clinical trial medication, with secure, traceable processes always under pharmaceutical supervision.

Our team receives continuous training in new technologies and trial models, ensuring agile, safe logistics adapted to the sector’s evolving needs. Logistical innovation not only speeds up timelines but also reduces unnecessary travel, optimizes resources, and makes research more human and sustainable.

4. Collaboration and operational excellence: the key to success

Excellence is always the result of joint effort. At Logista Pharma, we firmly believe that collaboration among hospitals, sponsors, healthcare professionals, and logistics operators is the path to harmonizing processes, sharing best practices, and anticipating potential issues.

Our involvement in defining new standard operating procedures and welcome manuals contributes to more coordinated and efficient logistics.

The Farmaindustria Guide to Excellence provides a clear roadmap to consolidate the role of Hospital Pharmacy as a driver of clinical research. At Logista Pharma, we are proud to contribute our experience, innovation, and sustainable commitment to continue promoting excellence in clinical trial logistics and, in doing so, improving patients’ lives.
